The Long Beach SHORTSTOP Program assists young men and women ages 10-17 away from the juvenile justice system through legal education for juveniles and their parents and can result in successful diversion

Every year, we fulfill our overall goal to deliver a continuum of mentoring and counseling programs that enable at-risk youth to gain the self-management and life skills they need to create successful futures. Understanding that making lasting behavioral change is difficult or impossible for children if not adequately supported by the family, we also fulfill a goal of engaging parents with their children’s interventions and providing support and information for them so that the entire family can benefit not only from the youth’s new behaviors, but also from parents’ understanding of their children’s personal growth as they learn more about themselves through our programs.

We have a successful completion rate of 90 percent.

WHAT ARE KIDS SAYING ABOUT SHORTSTOP?

"Thank you. I really enjoyed this class.  It gave me an opportunity to learn what can happen if I continue to get a record as a juvenile. I do not want to continue to get in trouble with the law and I hope I do not. This program is eye opening for us so we can avoid getting in trouble and prevent (us) from even ending up in jail." -A Student

“Honestly, I like this program a lot. I feel like it has helped me and taught me a couple of things so far that will help me in the future. I like how every staff member is so nice and caring for our future presence. They show us how to not get into trouble and to stay away from it if we see it coming. They explain everything to you if you don’t understand. The best part is when you get to hear everybody’s story on how they got there and what they are going to do to make it up for themselves and their parents. This program is the best!! I do not dislike one thing about this program. I recommend it to anybody else just so they can learn and to stay away from trouble.” -Alberto

“Thank you to all the SHORTSTOP staff and guest speakers for helping me understand everything about law and how the system works. I understand why you want the best for us teenagers and I appreciate you so much. I remember when (the holding cell volunteer) took the time to sit there and took the time to share her life story with me and the other students. I liked her story and it was very interesting to hear what happened in her past as a teenager. I thank the public defender that was in the Zoom (meeting); she was helping us understand the situations for our actions. She helped me so much, even before the Zoom classes. She helped me get to my class and she answered all the questions I needed. I truly thank all of you and I appreciate what you’re doing for us teens. Thank You.” -A Student

The Road To Completion
At the end of session one, the participants are given homework that must be completed when they return in two weeks for session two. The assignments focus on improving communication in the home, victim awareness and empathy.
During session two, instructors meet with the youth and their parents to discuss the homework assignments. Near the end of session two, parents and youth are reunited for a graduation ceremony that highlights the positives in their family relationships and in the juveniles themselves.
The cost for the program is $125.00 for both sessions. If the juvenile and their family are not able to pay the full amount of the program cost, we can work with them on a payment plan. A juvenile need not be from Long Beach to participate in the program.
